A Survey on Birth Environment at the General Hospitals in Seoul


Abstract
This study has been made for the purpose of analyzing the birth environment at the general hospitals in Seoul, 31 hospitals out of 38 which has over 150 beds, for the period of Dec. 1, 1986 through Feb. 28, 1987.
Questionaires containing 28 items of questions developed by author were delivered for collection of essential data.
The results were as follows:
1. General background of the selected hospitals.
Status of class distribution made by standard of classification.were as follows; "A" class: 19.36%, "B" class: 45.16%, "C" class: 35.48%.
As for averaged delivery cases for a month, it appeared that less than 50 cases group were 41.93%, 50-99 cases, 100-149 cases and over 150 cases group were 19.36% respectively. Out of them 87.10% were hospitalized during 2.5 days postpartumly.
2. Physical environment.
Basic facilities accommodated in birth room were generally sufficient, but emergency operating room and recovery room after delivery were rather short. Facilities for parturient woman and her family s convinience were insufficient, especially for the family.
Environment controlling facilities were generally lacking, especially in soundproofing. Facilifies for maintaining privacy of parturient woman herself and cultural amusement were generally short and also revealed its low usages.
3. Psychological environment.
The supporting environment between parturient woman and her family were lacking on the whole, pa - ticularly the opportunity for husband¢¥s participation were not almost allowed.
Environment for the mother-baby relationships were generally lacking, and breast-fed case in hospi l were considerably rare (74.19%).
4. Antiseptic environment.
Wearing of the cap, mask and slippers within birth room were in good condition, but condition of scrubbin and the use of nursing nnnaratus revealed rather insufficient.
